Tanner, why copywriting?

Long story short, I’m a creator. From writing songs, comedy, series scripts to reporting on events surprisingly well. I love to articulate ideas, emotions, laughter and arguments to people in a way that lights them up. And come away feeling like they know everything they need to know while enjoying the read.

But, I never realized that I was good at it for a long time…

In school and throughout the years, it was pretty apparent that I was not destined to be a mathematician or any kind of scientist. (couldn’t keep my attention on it)

But, for whatever reason, I could write a paper that would grab people by the neck and glue their eyes to the words.

So, I went to college and was put into several higher level writing classes.

I loved it! That’s about all I loved in school, though… So, I dropped out and became a nomad.

Played in several bands, worked as a carpenter, traveled and gained A TON of life experiences. Settling as a railroad conductor and engineer for a few years. (That will suck the life out of you…)

One day, my mother said I should do something with writing… “Son, you were always an incredible writer. Have you thought about a career in journalism?”

That got me thinking… And looking around… I found copywriting and was hooked! This was at the time of the big ‘laptop lifestyle’ craze.

I bought courses, went to several live events, acquired mentors, built a collection of copy books, studied the greats and practiced everyday.

Even 4 years later I’m still rereading the books, getting mentored, studying and getting better…

I love what I do because I just love to write and express. And geek out on automations, targeting, KPIs, testing, optimizing and coming up with interesting angles. 🙂
